Even though the dark veil of the pandemic has been lifted and we aren’t that bothered about disinfecting every nook and cranny, sometimes disinfecting car interiors, especially truck interiors becomes a necessity. Just because we have escaped the dystopian Corona Virus, does not mean that germs cease to exist. Therefore, disinfecting your leather car interiors should be an important step of your leather care routine. In this article, we will share some tips for disinfecting car interiors. So, before you click that little red X, first hear us out.

In case your car or truck interiors are made of real leather, you must take extra care when disinfecting them. Keep in mind that strong disinfectants, which many of us used in the era of the Corona Virus can cause your leather to dry out. And after so many discussions and rants on leather, we all know now that dry leather equals sad leather. It is common knowledge that real leather is skin, and just like ours, it needs moisture to stay supple, and soft. Without moisture, your beloved leather car interiors will dry, fade, and ultimately, crack.

For disinfecting car interiors like seats, steering wheels, or anything else, invest in a mild leather cleaner with disinfecting properties. A good leather cleaner will be strong enough to disinfect and clean your leather car interiors, but mild enough to not cause dryness. For disinfecting car interiors, start by vacuuming them to remove all the dirt and debris. Once that is done, apply the leather cleaner on a soft, lint-free cloth and gently wipe the surface of the leather. Once thoroughly cleaned, leave the leather to dry.

Afterwards, restore any moisture that was naturally lost with time and age by using Whites Pearl Leather Conditioner. Apply a small amount of leather cleaner on a soft, clean cloth. Gently massage the conditioner on the leather in circular motions. Once thoroughly conditioned, leave the leather to dry for 2 to 24 hours. Make sure to condition your leather car interiors every 6 months or so. Whites Pearl Leather Conditioner not only helps restore the moisture content of leather, keeping it soft and supple but also protects it from water and sun damage.

What not to use on leather car seats

When disinfecting car interiors, make sure to not use any harsh chemicals, or disinfectants as these can not only cause dryness of leather but can also cause irrevocable damage. Disinfecting products like disinfectant wipes can dry out the leather, leading to fading, cracks, and peeling. In some cases, they can also cause your leather to stain. Given below are the names of disinfecting chemicals that you have to avoid at all costs:

  • Common Disinfectant Wipes
  • Lysol
  • Isopropyl alcohol and wipes
  • Bleach
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Sanitizing wipes

Household products, DIY cleaners, or disinfectants should also not be used for the purpose of disinfecting car interiors. Leather is gentle like skin, and you should treat it as such.

Faux leather car interiors can also be disinfected by using a leather cleaner. Just make sure to read the label to check if you can use said cleaner on faux leather or not. Before applying the cleaner, make sure to do a patch test to see if the leather will react adversely to the cleaner or not. Moreover, harsh chemicals, like disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer should be kept away from faux leather.
